Families

My Family, My Neighborhood My Story features parents and other caregivers from low-income neighborhoods who were recruited and trained in interviewing and videotaping techniques in response to a common perception that low-income parents have fewer aspirations for their families than the more affluent. The stories the women tell in this program show that attitude, strength and unending urge to succeed have kept them from falling through the cracks like so many other families around them.

The focus is on family support, on understanding the strengths of families living in low-income neighborhoods and on what helps families survive and successfully overcome obstacles facing them. My Family, My Neighborhood, My Story dramatically illustrates for other low-income parents and the general public the fact that families, regardless of class, race and socio-economic background, share the same hopes, dreams and aspirations for their children and themselves. Closed captioned. $195.00; rental $50.00. 60-minutes.

"While...the program emphasizes the power of family in succeeding against the high odds of failure in poorer areas of a major city, it also shows with matter-of-fact frankness the murder, crime, drug-addiction and shattered lives that many residents must overcome before getting to lead what most would consider normal lives."
