Violence in the Media

Media Mayhem: More than Make Believe is intended to demonstrate to young people, especially those considered "at risk," that the violent action pervading today's media is an artificial, contrived device intended to draw audiences, not a reflection of reality. This half- hour program includes perspectives of violent offenders, an ex-television story analyst, and seven young actors portraying themselves in adult positions of authority. It is an entertaining introduction to media literacy for students in grades 7-12 and an in-service program for teachers of younger students. $195 (rental $50), 30 minutes.

"...a holistic examination of media violence... I would have no hesitation in highly recommending this..."
--David Considine, Chair, National Media Literacy Conference

"After watching this program, many viewers will feel misled and manipulated by the mass media..."
--School Library Journal/April 1995

"Although it's nearly three times the price and only one-third as long as 'Does TV Kill?' (VL-7/95), this program on violence in the media is a much more cogent and illuminating look at the escalation of mayhem in the media in recent years. With our overwhelming preoccupation with crime, it is a timely, informed and sure-to-be-popular entry."
--Video Linbrarian

"One positive aspect is the program's scrutiny of a variety of media outlets such as television dramas, movies, MTV, newscasts and video games. Most programs dealing with media violence opt to focus on one or two of these, often neglecting newscasts and video games altogether."
